How I Used AI to Visualize My Dream Home
I wanted to visualize my dream home. My goal? To create a mood board that would serve as a daily reminder of what I’m striving for.
I live in Colorado and love to ski, a modern mountain home is what I had in mind.
I turned to Google Images and wasn’t liking what I saw:
Midjourney
Disappointed with what already existed, I turned to AI to help create what was in my head.
I used Midjourney, one of the more popular generative AI tools.
You type words (a prompt) and out pop novel images.
Here was my first prompt, and the results:
modern mountain home tall ceiling natural light living room kitchen light exposed
This was good, but a bit more grandiose than what I was imagining. I also didn’t like how dark the home felt. I added some specificity to the ceiling height and spoke to how I envisioned the lighting.
A view inside a small modern mountain home. 20 ft wood ceilings. natural light. Living room and kitchen. light exposed repurposed wood. A view of the snow-covered mountains in the background. Cabinporn.
I liked it!
The size felt more realistic and the openness of the room (how the kitchen, living room, and dining room connected) was exactly what I was envisioning.
Experimentation
Midjourney allows you to pick a single image (of the 4 you see above) to upscale and download, which is what I did in order to place it on my mood board.
I also continued my prompting experimentation, here are a few of my favorites derived from the following prompt:

Reflections
I am blown away by what Midjourney can create.
As a photographer and generally creative person, I was initially terrified, thinking “Will my skills be useless soon”, but I’ve evolved my thinking to view AIs like Midjourney as what they are — tools.
What did painters think when cameras were first introduced?
Don’t we still value painting, despite the fact that we all carry a camera in our pockets that can “paint” the world in an instant?
I believe that AI will allow more people to be creative.
Those that don’t feel confident painting, drawing, or using a camera can just type (or even dictate) what’s in their head and get an image!
Your turn
Now, it’s your turn to play. Keep in mind that one can type anything into Midjourney and generate an unlimited amount of never-seen-before images.
To get started with Midjourney yourself, I suggest reading this Quick Start Guide. If you don’t want to pay for Midjourney, you could do what I did for free using the AI Dream Home tool on realtor.com.
